Verbal offer, then a hiring freeze two days before the written one
“Never decline anything on a verbal offer.”
Solid technical process: recruiter screen, hiring manager chat, a practical coding exercise (relevant, not leetcode trivia), and a four-person virtual on-site. Everyone was prepared and on time. I got a verbal offer on a Friday with a number I was happy with. The following Tuesday, the recruiter called to say a hiring freeze had landed and the offer was pulled before the written version went out. To their credit, the recruiter was straight with me and apologetic — but I had already declined another company on the strength of the verbal. Lesson learned about verbal offers; wish the transparency about the freeze risk had come earlier.
